Optional Front Bearing Temperature Monitor

The XLerator series spindles are available with an optional temperature sensor for the front bearings. Worn or damaged bearings generate increasing amounts of heat as they work their way to ultimate failure. The optional temperature sensor will allow the machine builder to monitor this temperature and set interlocks within the machine control software to predict bearing failure and promote long spindle life.

    Some examples are noted below:
  • A spindle motor must reach proper operating temperature before it is put under load to insure the proper bearing preload is present. Monitoring this temperature and preventing machine operation through interlocks until the proper temperature has been reached will insure the spindle is never operated cold.
  • A high temperature measurement could be used to signal the operator that it is time to schedule spindle maintenance. This warning will allow business owners to schedule maintenance activities before the spindle motor is completely disabled.
  • An extreme temperature measurement could be used to halt spindle operation in order to prevent further spindle damage and more costly repairs.

The purchase of this option Includes the installation of the thermocouple in the front bearing support and electrical connection to the sensor connector on the terminal box. A machine control with an available analog input is required to receive the output signal of 4-20mA for a temperature range of 0°F - 200°F. Contact PDS for further details.

Digital Display for Temperature Sensor

A digital display (similar to the one shown) is available for customers purchasing the optional temperature sensor who do not intend to integrate and monitor the signal with the machine control. This device can be used to display the temperature at the front bearing support and even Includes an output that can be wired into an alarm should one of the preset temperature limits be met. This device does not come prewired or installed. It is a separate item that must be installed and integrated by the customer.
